League One club Crewe Alexandra have announced the signing of Guinea-Bissau-born Spanish player Madger Gomes. The midfielder becomes the eleventh signing of the summer at Crewe Alexandra.

The objective for Crewe Alexandra this season is to gain promotion to the English Championship and they have decided to achieve this objective by signing a lot of players. Spanish midfielder Gomes is one of those players and he has put pen to paper on a two-year deal at the club until the summer of 2023. He was signed as a free agent.

New Crewe Alexandra signing Gomes had a trial at fellow League One team Portsmouth earlier this summer and was also linked with a move to another League One side, Charlton Athletic.

24-year-old Gomes started his career at Spanish La Liga team Villarreal. He represented the B team at the Europa League holders at the age of just 16. He joined Premier League giants Liverpool in 2014. Gomes spent three years as a Liverpool player before signing for Leeds United in 2017. The Spanish player spent some time in the French league with Sochaux and then Croatian side Istra. He spent the last two seasons at League One side Doncaster Rovers.

Gomes represented Spain at the u-15, u-17 and u-18 levels but is a long way from making the senior national team squad.

Crewe Alexandra has added a new midfielder to their squad with the free transfer signing of Gomes. He’s adept at being a defensive midfielder or a central midfielder. Gomes can play as one of the two central midfielders in front of a defensive midfielder in a 4-3-3 formation. Spanish player Gomes can also play as a false nine just like he did at Doncaster Rovers last season. He has shown his versatility throughout his career and Crewe Alexandra are on course to enjoy that versatility during his time at the club.
